Armed police search for shooter who injured man in Lower Hutt

A shooter is on the loose in Lower Hutt after a man was shot in the chest.

A police spokeswoman said members of the armed offenders squad were called to an address in George St, in the suburb of Stokes Valley, about 2.15pm on Tuesday.

"Police originally thought a woman had been taken to hospital. However, it was a man that has been taken to hospital with a serious injury to their chest."

Inspector Scott Cooper, of Hutt Valley, said police initially thought there was a second victim, but had since discovered that was not the case.

The man taken to hospital was in a serious but stable condition, he said.

"Police are currently undertaking various inquiries at addresses around Lower Hutt to locate the alleged offender," Cooper said.

"At this point, we don't believe they are a risk to the wider public."

Everyone involved knew each other, police said.

"The area will be cordoned for sometime while inquiries are carried out."

Officers with assault rifles were guarding the scene, across from Delaney Park, as a scene examination continued into the evening.

Residents were being diverted from George St, at Speedy St and Rintoul Grove.

A man who claimed to have witnessed the shooting, but did not want to be named, said it was the result of two friends fighting over a woman.

Stokes Valley resident Roxanne Caldow was walking down George St, across from the house where the shooting took place, when she heard a gunshot.

"I saw a lady running out and a boy, probably in his mid-twenties, and he was screaming out for her to get out of the house."

The woman was possibly injured, she said. Both were yelling for help.

"I called the ambulance. I was shit scared to be honest, I've never been in a situation like this before.

"I had to quickly get away because I'm pregnant."

Caldow remained concerned for her safety, with the whereabouts of the shooter unknown.

"I know that the gunman's still at large, so I'm quite scared, because I live up in the hood."

A resident, who lives down the adjacent Bird Grove, said she heard at least one gunshot then saw police out on a nearby road.

"I only heard a gunshot and yelling; saw some people out on the street but didn't think much of it until I drove down the road and saw the police out on the road talking to people," she said.
